Minerals in the Altai territory are presented with complex ore, copper, nickel, cobalt, iron ore, precious metals. Altai is famous for its unique deposits of jasper, porphyry, marble, granite, mineral and drinking water, natural therapeutic muds. Salt lakes of Altai contain substantial stores of minerals for chemical industry: sodium sulfate, common salt, magnesium sulfate and bromine salt.
Complex ore can be found in 16 deposits with the total balance reserve of 70 million tones. The deposits are close to each other in the area with a well developed infrastructure. Beside basic metals – copper, lead and zinc the ore contains gold, silver, cadmium, bismuth, selenium, thallium, gallium, tellurium, sulphur and other elements (in some deposits barite is present). Development license for four deposits has been obtained. Extraction work is carried out in the Rubtsovskiy deposit, a concentrating plant has been built with a year output of 350 – 400 thousand tones of concentrate per year. Zarechenskiy deposit will be set up in 2007 (the full capacity is 75 thousand tones per year). Korablikhinskiy deposit will be set up in 2009 (the full capacity is over 800 thousand tones per year). Zakharovskiy deposit will be set up in 2010 (the full capacity is over 250 thousand tones per year).
The source of iron ore is presented with two well developed deposits with the total reserve of 490 million tones. The deposits are in an unappropriated subsoil stock.
A high prognostic potential of coal (200 million tones of black coal and 600 million tones of brown coal). Coal extraction increase in the near future is connected with Munayskoe brown coal deposit. Extraction is being carried out in one of its sites. The whole deposit with the reserve of 34.7 million tones can provide over 800 tones of coal per year.
Gold is found in complex ore deposits, gold deposits and gravel deposits. Gold of complex type is located in 16 explored deposits in the south of the Altai territory. One gold deposit has been explored and is being developed. Gravel deposits are in 17 locations where 8 deposits are developed.
Geological survey is being carried out to find gold, complex ore, subterranean and mineral water, therapeutic muds, non-metallic minerals.
The Altai territory has one of the biggest sources of mineral water in Russia that has become the basis for resort system. Resort Belokurikha uses springs with sub-thermal low-mineralized low-radon nitrogen-siliceous water.
The State regulation of terms of subsoil use is carried out with administration, licensing, stocktaking, control. The right to use subsoil is granted through auction or tenders with further licensing the winning company. The authorities that are responsible for licensing in the Altai territory are: the Altai territory administration - widespread minerals; the Federal agency for subsoil use of the Russian Federation natural resource department and the Local agency for subsoil use in the Altai territory - other minerals.
The Russian law in effect provides a possibility for the investors to explore and extraction of minerals on the basis of agreement about produce division during the use of subsoil.
