The Altai territory has a large system of medical and disease preventive institutions.
The system of medical institutions of the Altai territory: total medical institution number – 457 (including 251 stationary institutions and 205 outpatient clinics).
Rural institutions are: central district hospitals – 60, district hospitals – 113, outpatient clinics – 165, obstetric departments – 1017.
Urban institutions are: hospitals and specialized clinics with sickbeds – 79, specialized polyclinics – 1, polyclinics – 33, obstetric departments – 1.
There are 27 institutions of the Altai territory importance including 14 hospitals, 2 multifield hospitals, 3 polyclinics and 6 specialized clinics.
Medical centers: The Altai Diagnostic Centre, the Altai Perinatal Centre, the Altai AIDS Prevention and Therapy Centre, the Altai Catastrophe Medicine Centre.
The stationary medical institutions have 27489 sickbeds with twenty-four-hour presence of patience (including 959 sickbeds with nurse care) and 581 day presence sickbeds.
Outpatient policlinics have 1414 day presence sickbeds.
The total number of sickbeds where patients are present during the daytime is 1995.
Specialized medical aid is provided by the Altai territory clinical hospital and the Altai territory clinical hospital for children, the diagnostic centre, 21 specialized clinics and specialized centres: perinatal, cardiologic, hematologic, orthopaedic, hand trauma, maxillofacial surgery, vascular surgery centres, etc. Ambulance service is provided by 82 departments of emergency aid and the air medical service department.
11158 physicians and 27642 medical technicians work in all Altai medical and educational institutions. Most of the physicians are graduates of the Altai State Medical University.
Altai medicine has a great up-to-date diagnostic basis that includes: 3 MR-imagers, 8 computerized tomographic systems, over 212 ultrasonic diagnostics systems, 7 thermovision cameras, 115 photofluorographic units, various endoscopic equipment.
The Altai territory Kidney Transplantation and Chronic Hemodialysis Centre has been determined as inter-territorial for the territories of Siberia and Far East.
Surgeons of the Altai cardiologic dispensary operate on 500 patients each year. Some operations are unique medical life - saving technologies and their performance here meets with the level of the world leading clinics. Such operations include implanting pacemakers and implanting special devices that prevent coronary vessels from closing.
Endoscopic surgery develops dynamically at present. Over 3,5 thousand high-tech endoscopic operations are made each year. Unique endoscopic operations are mastered and made. One of the unique endoscopic operations that are made in the Altai territory is replacement vertebras with titanium - nickel prosthesis.
The Altai Health Service Committee considers that the major tasks of the Altai health service are:
development of primary health care on the basis of municipal health service;
further development of the General Practitioner institution;
development of medical – geographic zoning to provide a better specialized medical service for the rural citizens;
New approaches and principles in the motherhood and childhood protection system have been developed in the Altai territory. A new programme \"Children of Altai” has been approved.
